Climate advocacy groups sue Auckland Transport, Council over transport plan that fails to reduce emissions
A coalition of climate and transport advocacy groups has filed Court proceedings against Auckland Transport and Auckland Council in relation to a recently adopted land transport plan that fails to provide for any meaningful reduction in carbon emissions.
Advertising Standards Board rules “zero carbon gas” advertising campaign is misleading
The Advertising Standards Complaints Board has upheld a complaint by Lawyers for Climate Action NZ about an advertising campaign by Firstgas which contained greenwashing and misleading statements about “zero carbon gas”. The Board has ordered the adverts to be withdrawn.

LCANZI sues Climate Change Commission over errors in its Advice to Minister
Today LCANZI filed High Court proceedings seeking judicial review of the Climate Change Commission’s advice to to the Minister for Climate Change.
The grounds for the action are that the Commission’s advice does not comply with the Climate Change Response Act or with Aotearoa New Zealand’s obligations under the Paris Agreement.

Last week, LCANZI wrote to the Minister for Climate Change, Hon James Shaw, regarding a significant error in the Climate Change Commission’s analysis on the updated NDC.

Lawyers for Climate Action NZ (LCANZI) is deeply disappointed that the Climate Change Commission’s final advice today recommends emissions budgets to 2030 which would see Aotearoa New Zealand’s emissions continuing at a level higher than is compatible with keeping global warming to 1.5C.

LCANZI submission on Auckland Council’s draft Regional Land Transport Plan
On Sunday LCANZI made a submission on Auckland Council’s draft Regional Land Transport Plan (RTLP). LCANZI submits that the RLTP is unlawful. The law requires the RLTP to be “in the public interest”. The Council has made clear in its Climate Plan what this means: to halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, including by reducing transport emissions by 64% from 2016 levels. The draft RTLP does not achieve this. Instead, it provides for transport emissions to increase 6% by 2031, or at best reduce by 12% if the Government puts in place certain policies.

On Saturday 8 May the EU ambassador to New Zealand will be showing a free screening of The Biggest Little Farm in Auckland at AUT at 5.30pm. It will be followed by a Q&A discussion with Dr David Hall on regenerative farming in New Zealand.

The Financial Sector (Climate-related Disclosures and Other Matters) Amendment Bill, which will introduce the Climate-Related Financial Disclosures regime, has been introduced to Parliament.
