DESCRIPTION

Role: This is a paid executive director contract for Lawyers for Climate Action NZ Inc.

Who are we? LCANZI is a group of around 500 lawyers, associate members and supporters who want to use our legal skills and experience to ensure a better climate future for everyone. We are committed to ensuring that New Zealand meets it obligations to contribute to the global effort against climate change. Read more about our organisation here.

Location: The majority of the LCANZI Board are based in Auckland. However, given that we mainly work digitally, you could be based anywhere in Aotearoa.

Hours and pay: This is a contract for between 20-40 hours per week (the number of hours is open to negotiation with generally flexible hours but ideally spread across the week). The term is for an initial 6-month period with the potential for the contract to be renewed at the end of this period. Pay is subject to negotiation depending on the skills and qualifications of the successful candidate but in the range of $50per hour (inclusive of any GST). As a contractor,  you will need to declare your own income and pay your own taxes. You would also be required to provide your own laptop/phone.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement organisational strategy in conjunction with the Board;

  • Determine your own workplan and priorities in conjunction with strategy and other Board requirements;

  • Facilitate training and other knowledge sharing opportunities within the organisation;

  • Advising the Board;

  • Managing relationships and workstreams between Board members, subcommittees and volunteers;

  • Fundraising efforts, including applying for grants and sponsorship for society activities;

  • Coordinating media responses in conjunction with Board and subcommittee members;

  • Coordinate the work of our subcommittees and potentially be involved in drafting submissions and other work product;

  • Liaising with other climate action organisations through our networks;

  • Liaising with legal bodies (such as NZLS and law firms) on LCANZI projects and initiatives;

  • Managing member and public enquiries and co-ordinating responses with Board and subcommittee members;

  • Attending and advising monthly Board meetings;

  • Contribute to members’ newsletters, press releases and emails to members;

Qualifications/skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Zoom, Excel, Dropbox, willingness to learn to use SquareSpace (website platform)

  • An understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • A robust understanding of climate change and New Zealand’s climate regulatory landscape

  • Good written communication and management skills

  • Legal skills and experience desirable, but not mandatory

Other contractors:

Supported by a part-time administrator who works approx. 10 hours per week.
